This week we’re getting horny for the holidays as we unwrap Krampus, the 2015 horror/comedy directed by Michael Dougherty and starring Adam Scott, Toni Collette, David Koechner, and Allison Tolman. When a dysfunctional family’s Christmas spirit collapses faster than a mall Santa on his lunch break, they accidentally summon a shadowy Alpine demon who punishes the naughty—not with coal, but with nightmare fuel. So did this holiday horror-comedy slay the sleigh, or did Krampus just leave us feeling frostbitten and frustrated?

🎬 Background & Interesting Details
- Folklore roots: Krampus is based on a real European Christmas demon from Alpine folklore, traditionally portrayed as punishing misbehaving children—often depicted carrying chains, bells, or sacks for abducting the wicked.
- Director pedigree: Michael Dougherty is a massive monster nerd, previously co-writing X2 and Superman Returns, before later directing Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019).
- Practical effects love: Many of the creatures—like the Jack-in-the-Box, gingerbread men, and the deranged toys—were done with practical effects and animatronics, giving the film an old-school Gremlins-style vibe.
- Tone tug-of-war: The movie intentionally walks a tightrope between horror and comedy, which has made it divisive—some viewers love the pitch-black humor, others want it scarier or funnier, but not both.
- Holiday subversion: Beneath the monsters and mayhem, the film is openly cynical about consumerism, family dysfunction, and hollow holiday traditions.
